Amanda Greavette
The Birth Project Artist Statement
Birth is a physiological, emotional and spiritual event. While it is the one experience that unites all of humanity, it remains a social taboo- a topic discussed only in parenting circles or among the medical community. It is a subject rich with controversy, drawing an extreme range of reactions from those confronting it. The media has historically conveyed it in a medical, artificial model that addresses social and healthcare issues, but outside prenatal education the general public never encounters representation of birth or it's processes.
I wish to paint birth as a powerful and profound event of human existance. As an extension of my love for the figure, portrait, nude and narrative, the birth experience also holds immeasurable meaning and unleashed emotion. It's fleshy physicality and heady symbolism is the perfect landscape for an artist to explore the human experience. I aim to represent the raw animalistic nature of birth as well as the beauty and grace of the human form, in an attempt to remind the viewer of our humble and awesome beginnings.
